Does Social Media Makes All Of Us Phenomenologists?

It is every designer’s dream to design a chair. I have yet to meet an industrial designer that doesn’t want to design a chair or a car. It is designer’s dream for those who study transportation design is to design a car and I get it. Chairs and tables? The reality is how often designers get a chance to design their own chairs? And every transportation designers ended up doing is styling a car that was designed by a computer. There are disproporationately large amount of chairs being designed than to other objects and products.

Any object whether it is chair, a table, a smartphone, or a coffee maker does not exist…

I Imagine Over 95% Of All Patents That Apple Filed Are Useless. Here’s A Good Example.

patent wars are continuing as we speak. With the proliferation of cheap sensors
people are talking about putting them everything. We use them in our cars to see if
the tire pressure is correct and washroom etc. It is part of our everyday lives already.

Apple just filed a patent application to put
sensors in your sneakers so they can send signals to your iPhone to tell you it
is time for a new pair. If I am Nike, I would file 100 patents to put sensor in everything from sneakers to sport pants. Is this patent really useful? I think we all have a pretty
good sense when do we need to replace them just by looking at…

Maria Jesus Galan, a nun who has spent 35 years with the Santo Domingo el Rea convent in Toledo, Spain has been spending a lot of time on Facebook and digitizing the Dominican convent's archives.

When the local government gave her a prize for her hard work and she has over 600 Facebook friends, but she is not making any friends in the convent. Some nuns reportedly claimed that Sister Maria's Facebook activity "made life impossible" for them. So she was therefore asked to leave the convent and now back to live with her mom. There are still so many who are afraid of technology, not just the crazy leaders of Iran or Libya.

In 2012, Facebook Will Give New Meanings To ‘Social Services’ And Will Pass Yahoo In Revenue And A Key Player In Mobile Space.

A week away from Christmas and we're not slowing down yet. Still plenty of things going on and I plan to spend the next 5 days in the office (a first in a year). This is the time I usually make predictions and I am working on a long one to share with our clients. Give you some ideas of what I am looking at:

At the end of 2012, there is the mass push to the clouds and consolidation will happen and India will probably own 25% of the world’s market. Not finished with my spreadsheet models, 25% is close.

At the end of 2012, the idea pf 'customer engagement' will finally emerge…

Interaction Design Has An Important Role To Play In Our Future, It Has The Power To Transform Cultures.

There is two articles on IC today, one on Inc. magazine and the other in Globe and Mail. We're getting some good press coverage and we need to continue to make our story heard. In the meantime, we continue onto my journey of building global capabilities. Interaction design (IxD) will be a core focus, and I don't mean just web or mobile interactions. IxD will be one of the most important strategic capability for companies to build meaningful engagement and sustainable differentiation as part of their enterprise level experience strategy.

Let Me Propose To Limit The ‘Intenet Kill Switch’ To Just Facebook And Twitter.

Screen shot 2010-06-22 at 10.29.12 PM
For me, the Internet is more important than the phone, television and even electricity in some cases. When the Internet is down, we can't work and suddenly we're disconnected from our world.

It has become so important for many of of us these days. I can't imagine if the Internet is down for more than a few hours.

A US Senate Bill is proposing that if there is a "cybersecurity emergency" the President should be able to "seize control of, or simply shut down, portions of the Internet," with broadband providers and search engines required to comply. It is called the 'Internet Kill Switch'. The US President could be awarded absolute power to control the Internet in the case of a…

Design’s Fundamental Role Is Problem Solving. So What Problems Did These Three Designs Try To Solve?

My plan for Europe did not materialize thanks to Yjafjallajokull (pronounced as ay-uh-fyat-luh-yoe-kuutl-ul), it is the the name of the Icelandic volcano. I was looking forward for two days intense innovation workshop.  This doesn’t happen often but it literally put Europe air traffic on a stand still. Think about those fresh flowers in Amsterdam? This is not helping me in terms of my work keeps piling up. Life is full of surprises.

My last post on Design Thinking drew upon a lot of discussions both here, Facebook and linkedin groups. I’ve got lot of people sending me their scores and I think people are having fun with it, but please don’t take it too seriously.

Back to design, here are a few everyday design ideas to…
